∆IYP ~ Ch∆nge In Your Pocket (1-17)

Every one has a story to tell ~ and so here is mine.  This page holds a collection of videos that 'tell my story' and along the way also unearth all of the secrets to having a successful life ~ happy, confident, fulfilling and significant.  I will share with you everything I have learned along the way and everything I am still learning.  My passion is ch∆nge (∆ = the medical symbol for change) and I want to show you how to have the tools for change right in your pocket. These videos are also posted on my Take Charge Face Book page and you can follow these as video Tweets on Twitter @MilesNitz.  Join me on a journey to living the optimal life.  Would love to have you along for the ride!

  • Change In Your Pocket ~ Introduction ~ May 2, 2017
This is the first video in a series that promises to give you inspiration and answers.  It tells my story and pretty much everything I know about change and living the optimal life.  You can also follow the series on Face Book/Take Charge or Twitter@MilesNitz.  I hope you enjoy watching them as much as I enjoy making them!
  • ∆IYP2 ~ Growing Up In So Cal
Growing up in So Cal was great! Playing baseball also great! Gaining 80 lbs sucked. Getting divorced ~ super sucked. Learning how to change my thinking ~ priceless!!
  • ∆IYP3 ~ What I Learned In Therapy
So what did I learn in therapy?  Not much, really, just everything I need to know to 'live the dream' ~ that's all! And I am living it! Best of all ~ you can too ... really!
  • ∆IYP4 ~ What I DIDN'T Learn In Therapy
What I didn't learn in therapy was how to actually 'do' therapy.  I thought it would be as easy as telling people what I had done ~ right? I couldn't have been further from the truth.  There is a whole lot more to it ~ and 4 years of grad school later, I finally knew.
  • ∆IYP5 ~ What I Learned In Grad School
In grad school I learned about CBT ~ a form of psychotherapy aimed at modifying not only overt behaviors but also beliefs, attitudes, cognitive styles and expectations. This was revolutionary when it was invented back in the 1960’s ~ if you can believe that?
  • ∆IYP6 ~ Distorted Thinking
My assignment in grad school was to pick a time when my mood was low and experiment with one of the interventions in the Feeling Good Handbook. This was my first real introduction to CBT. This was the ticket!
  • Be My Editor ~ Special Invite
Want to try your hand at editing? I could use your help. Editors help authors decide what 'ideas' make the cut. I would just as soon leave that up to my listeners and viewers. If you are interested in following 'my story' the story of how 'Change In Your Pocket' came into existence (if not yet, see my video posts to catch up on Facebook or Twitter), I would be interested in hearing what you have to say. This video explains the rationale behind the invite. You can post, tweet or text me if you have something to say. @MilesNitz 260-415-5967 or mnitz@takechargecounseling.org.
  • ∆IYP7 ~ Therapy Meets YouTube and SnapChat
In the 30 years since, the entire face of communication, and getting information ~ via the Internet ~ has completely changed. My goal with my methods is to keep up with these changes and continue evolving C∆VP to fit into a new world that literally changes every six months.  Technology and virtual platforms are continuously evolving, so will my methods.
  • Tweener#2 ~ What does Change In Your Pocket mean?
I am calling this video and the rest like it 'tweener' videos, short for 'in between the other' videos ~ that is, the ∆IYP videos that make up my 'story'.  The response to my invite to 'help edit' has been surprising.  I already have several ideas in the que, thanks to interested followers.  Some of the ideas will ultimately be 'topics' for my story, other 'ideas' are merely questions that deserve an answer (I will do my best to answer all of them).  This 'tweener #2" is just that, an answer to a question from Dan.  Great question, Dan, thanks for participating.
  • ∆IYP8 ~ NLP
NLP teaches people how to re-program the system using the basic programming tool we call language.  Neuro refers to neurology, linguistic to language and programming refers to the thought patterns, perceptions or mindsets our language programs onto the system.  Learning NLP is like learning the language of your own mind and using it to re-program sectors of the hard-drive that are programmed poorly.
  • ∆IYP9 ~ What I learned from Reader’s Digest

It wasn’t until after I actually got out of my grad program that I tripped across the word ‘neuroplasticity’ and now I use the word every single day.  I was reading a Reader’s Digest article in the April 2002 issue, the year I finished grad school. Talk about serendipity.  This article led me directly to a huge paradigm shift.  Again, shift happens!

  • ∆IYP10 ~ Neuroplasticity
Neuroplasticity is the Scientific term for the human brain's ability to change. If neuroplasticity couldn't happen, then I would be wasting your time and mine talking about how to change.  Plastic refers to the idea of re-shaping something. Just as plastic can be warmed, remolded, and then when cooled retains its new shape, so can the brain literally be reshaped ~  by our thoughts.
  • ∆IYP11 ~ NB∆1 ~ Intro
I have never been interested in doing something a certain way simply because ‘it has always been done that way’.  I am always questioning ~ why? Why do we do it this way and not that way?  If I don’t know, I will find out why and if it doesn’t make complete sense to me I will experiment with new ideas until I get something that totally makes sense.  This is exactly that case with my neurobiology of change presentation.Enter a short description of this video here. What can your visitors expect to see when they click the Play button?
  •
    ∆IYP12 ~ NB∆2 ~Synapses

There are an estimated 100 billion neurons in the human brain.  Each neuron is connected to adjacent neurons via hundreds of thousands of synapses ~ 500 trillion synapses is the estimated capacity of the human brain.  These synapses are the tiny, micro-biological switch that makes everything happen in the brain.  Elegantly simple ~ supremely difficult to learn to control.  But once we do, it is a game-changer ~ THE game-changer.  And I don’t know about you, but I certainly want to ‘level-up’ in the game of LIFE!

  • ∆IYP13 ~ NB∆3 ~ The World Is Flat
For about the first century or so of ‘neuroscience research’ it was believed that the brain was a rather fixed entity.  By late adolescence   the brain was thought to have completed development for the most part. Hence the term ‘coping skills’, those skills necessary to cope with what really wasn’t going to change much. This video explains how things have changed in the last 25 years.
  • Tweener 3 ~ Momentumal Speaker
Chuck, from Fort Wayne asks ~ What makes you different from a motivational speaker? My license to practice therapy, about 6 years of training and 12 more years of clinical experience, working directly with people to facilitate change using the most powerful psychological strategies known to man.  Other than that ~ nothing!  I want my videos to be as motivational as humanly possible.  I want to speak to you and have you be motivated to act ~ of course ~ that is what these videos are all about.

  • ∆IYP14 ~ NB∆4 ~ Why Don’t I Just Do It?
‘I know how good I feel when I exercise and how good it is for me … I don't understand why I just don’t do it?’  Sound familiar? I wish I had that proverbial ‘dime’ for every time I have heard it.  I used to think the same darn thing ~ that is until I learned about neuro~plasticity.  Now I know exactly why we don’t do the things we know we should (or vice versa), and that is what I want to show you here.  But I am not going to stop there.  What would be the point in knowing that if I didn’t ultimately show you how to actually consistently do what we know we should.
  • ∆IYP15 ~ NB∆5 ~ IKTs
I think it's safe to say that when it comes to something like exercise everyone has good intentions.  So what happens to those good intentions? It's so frustrating isn't it? We know we should exercise, and we really want to, we understand all of the benefits ~ but we just don't do it.  In this video I begin to unravel that mystery.
  • ∆IYP16 ~ NB∆6 ~ Opposing Systems
Regular, vigorous exercise is, without a doubt, one of the most effective ways to prevent a host of negative health conditions: obesity, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, stroke and even cancer. Yet 80% or more of Americans simply don’t do it. I say ‘simply’, but really it isn’t simple at all. This video introduces the two major opposing systems in the brain ~ the limbic system and the cerebral system.
  •

    ∆IYP17 ~ NB∆7 ~ Attention Trumps Logic

When a decision must be made, such as: ‘Should I exercise right now, or hit snooze and get an extra hour of sleep?’ The limbic system springs into action, making a very quick assessment of the situation and issuing a resounding ~ “Oh, hell no, this bed feels way too warm and cozy.  Besides, I didn't sleep all that well last night and I have a big day ahead.  I better just stay put and get an extra hour of sleep.’

Even though I made the logical decision last night to workout this morning, my limbic system gets out of the gate first and has no problem winning this duel at 6am.   Why?  Because logic really doesn’t carry as much weight in the brain as we think it does.  The commodity that rules in the brain is not logic, but rather attention and repetition. Of course logic is important, but attention and repetition trump logic every time.  This strategy is designed to make sure we live to see another day.
