Welcome to my website and my practice, Take Charge Counseling ~ My name is Miles Nitz and I am a licensed marriage and family therapist. Take Charge Counseling is my solo private practice, established in October of 2008.
12 ago now I walked into a coffee shop with my buddy Steve, my laptop and zero knowledge about how to create a website. I walked out with this website, and just ‘slightly more than zero’ knowledge about websites ~ but at least I had one. What you are looking at here is 12 years of learning, experimenting, trial and error. This website is 100% my work, no one else has ever touched it. Starting a private practice in therapy, left me no room in the budget for a web-designer, so I had to learn to do it myself. I make no apologies for the graphics, layout and presentation ~ I do my best. It is really the content that makes all the difference.
Many websites serve the purpose of branding, marketing, and selling product. And I'll admit that was my idea at first. But that has changed drastically over the years. What my website is now is my story, the story of my professional career as a therapist. It has come to be a collection of everything I know about helping people change. And ‘my story’ is written in text, audio and video ~ something to fit every learning style. If you would have told me 12 years ago that I would be creating audio tapes, and video tapes, and uploading them YouTube and my website. I would've told you you were crazy, but I guess maybe I'm the crazy one. My Book, as I think of my website now, will continue growing until I retire, or die, the latter probably coming first ~ because I love what I do too much to think about stopping.
Not only does my website contain my story, it also contains a significant portion of my actual practice. The ‘Videos’ page contains a dozen or so video series on various topics ranging from stress and anxiety, to exercise, weight loss, sleep and responsible drinking. These videos are designed to show the viewer how my strategies are applied to a wide variety of topics or issues.
The videos you will find are not simply introductions, they are designed to be an actual part of the therapy process, a big part. My goal with these videos is to present as many ideas, strategies and techniques, for change, as I possibly can, so the viewer and listener can gain a good understanding of how I go about my work. They are not marketing videos, but rather instructional videos ~ therapeutic videos. They are there to help you get started and keep you moving through the process. I think of them as a library of resources to help you get where you want to go.
Brand new in 2020, on this site, is also the rough draft my book: Why Can’t I Just Do It? I have written this book as a response to the many inquiries I get from people who would like to read more about what I do. When I explain that there really isn’t a book, but rather dozens of books from which my strategies and practices have been derived, many say: Well, then, You should write one. And so finally I did. It is part auto-biography and part biblio therapy, my attempt to tell you who I am, what I do and how I do what I do ~ literally everything about me and my practice.
I also want to direct your attention to the PVC tab. PVC stands for Premium Virtual Counseling. PVC is my proprietary platform that incorporates innovative virtual strategies and modalities to deliver premium services at a fraction of the cost of conventional counseling. PVC is a comprehensive, effective and efficient way to have virtual conversations wherever and whenever you have the time. No waiting, no schedule, no hassle ~ all conducted via that little device you probably have in your pocket right now, your smart phone. I have nicknamed this platform: Change In Your Pocket. Finally, therapy that is as smart as your phone! Simply click on the PVC tab to view a series of videos that explain the process in detail.
Now this website is meant to be dynamic, meaning that I am constantly in the process of adding new materials and cleaning out the old. It is actually quite challenging to keep content fresh and up-to-date all by yourself while trying to run a booming practice. I beg your pardon in advance for any out-dated material that still exists on the site. Just know it is probably already on the chopping block ~ all in due time.
Living in the midst of a pandemic has been hard on everyone, but for all the inconveniences Covid has wreaked on our society, there a few bright spots. One of those for me has been the gift of time. Going virtual has afforded me an extra 90 minutes of time every day. This means my website is about to get some more attention. The extra time has allowed me to finish the rough draft of my book and publish it on this site, which I just finished last month, November 2020, and now the site itself is in the cross-hairs, hence this re-taping of my Welcome video here in December 2020.
So if you are arriving here for the first time ~ welcome aboard! Feel free to tool around the entire website, and see what I'm talking about. Also feel free to shoot me a text or email if you have any questions, comments or suggestions. Hope you enjoy your time on the site!
Looking forward to hearing from you!
The Triquetra
I am often asked just what the logo for Take Charge stands for. It is a Triquetra. The word ‘Triquetra’ comes from the Latin for ‘three-cornered’ and although its exact origins are unknown, it has been found on Indian heritage sites that are over 5,000 years old. It has also been found on carved stones in Northern Europe dating from the 8th century AD and on early Germanic coins.
In the Christian faith, the three points of the Triquetra (also called the Trinity Knot) represent the Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In its original form of vesicae pisces, it incorporates the fish which is a popular Christian symbol. Occasionally, you may see the Trinity Knot enclosed within a circle as a means of emphasizing unity or eternity.
Uppercase delta ∆ (Δέλτα Délta) has a mathematical meaning and a medical meaning. 'Difference' is the most common meaning of the uppercase delta. It is simply the difference, or change, in a certain quantity. In the medical realm, the symbol ∆ means change.
According to the Celts, the most important things in the world came in threes; three domains (earth, sea and sky), three elements, three stages of life etc.
In my practice these 3 important elements are: Mind, Body & Spirit. The circle threaded through the 3 elements stands for my discipline ~ therapy ~ the entity developed to keep all 3 elements in balance and connected. The triangle and circle on the outside represent the relationship between change (∆) and stability (O) ~ both crucial elements in the discipline of obtaining, maintaining and integrating the whole, healthy person.
